Green spaces

Conserving the nature and the environment is an important duty, I would rather say a fundamental duty that every human being is obliged to. Nature has given us the best of everything free of cost but are we really accountable to what we have received. As a recent survey on few of the websites relating to green spaces and its importance has taken me in to a deep introspection about our own city Shillong.
Since being a spatial science professional I thought why not try to see our Shillong city aerially, so I login to a widely used application Google earth navigating and hovering around the city just inspecting the Open spaces/ Green spaces and doing a bit of time frame analysis, what actually I am seeing is that our City is expanding as the years pass, how and what way and pattern is our city expanding it is yet to be found out and deep inside me this entire thing have push me to initiate some kind of study (out of curiosity and knowhow). As I explore more and more of the areas of our Shillong city it appears we have few open spaces/ green spaces for recreational activities. With the expanding population in the city, many of the folks are spreading their wings towards the other areas of Shillong. What I fear is that with the burning demands we would ruin the available spaces.
No doubt development has to be there we cannot stop it none can stop it but the point is we should be looking at a sustainable way of development. I am sure with the recent news our CM have publicize a proposal of setting up a kind of infrastructure such as Times Square in New York, I am sure all of us are willing to see such type of development and yes personally I feel too such things should come up but my concern is not at the expense of our nature, such development should be sustainable. It would be really great if we could have along side the yet to come Times Square some kind of a Green infrastructure. Planners and developers I would say a huge task to workout keeping in mind the balance with the nature. In my recent readings what I found out is that a community should have green spaces/ open spaces alloted. The allotment may differ depending on population size and community area, however from my readings, the WHO have put up a standard for green spaces and that is 9 m2 green open space per city dweller. Considering this fact and  relating to our Shillong City I am sorry to say few localities have such type of spaces and not blaming may be it is because of the type of topography or probably there was no planning, monitoring etc of checking the urbanization during the earlier years.

The point to bring out is that development should be sustainable, green spaces/ open spaces are important in many aspects of our life.
